Course Description:

In this course, participants will gain advanced knowledge and skills to develop a structured approach to diagnosis and treatment of patients with movement system impairments of the neck and shoulder.

Course Goals:

  • Discuss the basis of the movement system and movement system impairment syndromes (MSI) of the shoulder and neck.
  • Describe causal and contributing factors in MSI of the shoulder and neck
  • Formulate a diagnosis and place a patient into the proper diagnostic category
  • Learn the standardized examination format for the cervical spine, scapula, and humerus
  • Describe and perform the standardized examination format for the cervical spine, scapula, and humerus
  • Describe the specific corrective exercises and their progressions for the neck and shoulder

Shirley Sahrmann, PT, PhD, FAPTA is Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Sahrmann has been a keynote speaker at the World Confederation of Physical Therapy, and has lectured at numerous universities from around the world. The MSI syndromes were developed by Shirley Sahrmann and have stood the test of time. These syndromes are described in her books, Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes and Movement System Impairment Syndromes of the Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spine.
